Grand Rapids' Roller Derby League Hosts Ohio in Final Bout of 2007roller derby bout grand rapids mi

GRAND RAPIDS - Now that roller derby has caught on across the country, The Grand Raggidy Roller Girls are sick of getting the "Grand Raggidy who?" treatment.

They've used 2007 as the year to put any doubts to rest and prove their position as "a league to watch."

The final quarter of the year proved a raging success for these hometown heroes. The league hosted an exciting season opener in September, followed by a derby-world shattering victory against Sin City Roller girls (Las Vegas) in October here in Grand Rapids.

In November, the ladies traveled to Nevada, where they once again scored a victory against the Sin City ladies, this time on someone else's' turf. Also in November, the league's "B-Sides" team defeated the Kalamazoo Kamikazes, while the Mitten Kittens (comprised of all-star members of the GRRG and the Detroit Derby Girls) scored first place at the first Fall Brawl in Fort Wayne, while the GRRG Rebelles took fourth.

"It's hard for me to believe how far the travel team has come in such a short period of time," says Travel Team co-captain Dot Matrix, who reminisced about the league's first travel team game - and resounding defeat - to the Detroit Derby Girls nearly a year ago.

"We put together a travel team and got SPANKED by the much more experienced Detroit team.  Now we're skilled enough to play side by side with them in tournaments."

Now the ladies are gearing up to host yet another travel team bout in Grand Rapids, when the Ohio Roller Girls (Columbus) visit on Saturday Dec. 8. The GRRG defeated the OHRG at the East Coast Extravaganza in March, and this rematch should prove to be a fight to the end.

Want to see just how far this little league has come and really, why wouldn't you?
